As a young bride, I left all my family and friends in Sydney to come here to Adelaide. I was…and still am…totally in love with my wonderful husband, and remain convinced that this was the right thing to do. However, I had no idea how lonely I would be! My Mother and Sister-in-law were fantastic in helping me settle in (Don’t get me wrong!), but it was the kindness of someone who was virtually a complete stranger that was especially sweet and memorable.

Her name was Glenys. She called me up, and took me out for coffee at Jets Cafe, Burnside (shame it’s not there anymore!). I can’t remember what we talked about now, but I remember the feeling of being welcomed and that there was someone else in Adelaide who I could turn to if I ever needed help. As she dropped me home, she gave me a cute little pot-plant.

I carried it inside and placed it in on my windowsill above the kitchen sink.

For over a year, this lady’s kind gesture filled my heart and my home with a beautiful reminder of her care for me and a reminder of God’s love for me.

A little over a year later, it moved up to our new home, where it happily lived on the windowsill near our dining table.

A few years later, my first precious bundle of joy came along. With his arrival, the plant departed. I didn’t have time to be lonely anymore…or care for plants either, so it seems!

Glenys was a busy lady. She had a husband and 3 children to care for. She was a very active member of her church. She was doing a thousand other things in her week, but she made time for this!

It is a gift that continues to impact me today. It made a difference to me. It could make a difference to someone you know.

What opportunities might you have to share the beauty of God’s love with people around you at the moment?

Perhaps you would like to learn to be more creative or use your creative skills for God’s glory. At Seeds Uniting Church we have a craft group which meets every Friday morning in the Aberfoyle Campus church hall from 9.30am – 11.30am during school term times. At this group you can learn new skills – knitting, crocheting, smocking, patchwork, card making, scrap booking to name a few or you can use your skills & abilities to teach others or to help others who are not as fortunate as we are.

One of our ministries is the making of prayer quilts where women use their patchwork & quilting skills to make beautiful quilts which are prayed over before they are given to men & women who are sick and in need of comfort. These quilts have been a great blessing to the many people who have received them.

The knitters & crocheters have made 100s of beanies, scarves, rugs and other garments which are given to the homeless, World Vision, Women’s & Children’s hospital, Flinders Neo-natal Unit and other needy folk.

We also make items for the Christmas Shoe Box project organised by Samaritan’s Purse and pack a large number of shoe boxes as part of this outreach by our church each year.

We have made 130 Christmas Advent calendars for the Children’s Ministry at our church and also arrange craft activities for the annual Road to Christmas Outreach event held each year.

We support the Cancer Council by holding a Big Morning Tea and have also been involved in special appeals like the Canberra & Victorian Bushfire tragedies. Our aim is to use our skills to bring comfort and joy, hope & peace wherever we are able.

We would welcome you at our friendly group where we have a lot of fun & chatter, supporting each other while hopefully helping others. We have a crèche and encourage young mums to attend and have a break and do something creative.

Women love spending time with each other whether that be one on one for a chai latte, going to the movies or getting together with a large group..

At She we encourage women to value who they are, enjoy life and know how much God loves them.

At She we welcome and embrace every woman regardless of their age.

As women we face many challenges and heartaches in this life. Through She we want all women to understand that they don’t have to do life on their own and that there are others who are there to support them.

In all of this, God is our strength, our friend and our Father. We love because He first loved us.

We have begun planning a new course for our girls and women and we want to look at issues such as self worth, overcoming failure, confidence and peer pressure.
